We only have a handful
of days without campground reservations and this was one of them. We hitched the trailer and aimed for some
specific campgrounds, stumbling upon a different National Park campground that
happened to have a few sites available right when we were looking (filling
moments later). We got the last site on
the lake, a site that reminded Barbara of the view at her childhood vacation
home. Can you see the lake through the
trees?
Then we hiked to Sol
Duc Falls.
We love the big trees that we have seen along many of our
hikes in the Pacific Northwest.
We saw big trees on the way to the falls and on a short hike
in the Ancient Grove, where some trees are over 500 years old. We noticed how
these two different types of trees grew so close together: a Western Hemlock
and a Douglas Fir.
We have also seen large Sitka Spruces and Red Cedars on this
trip. We just don’t get such large trees
in the East. They make our 100-ft high
White Pines in our yard look small.
Then we went to the Salmon Cascades. It would be cool to be here in the late
summer and see them jumping up these mini falls.
