We didn’t take many pictures on the day we went from the
North Cascades to Squamish,
British Columbia.
Our four hour trip ended up an all day affair.
We looked for internet on our way out of the North Cascades
to post the blog and get caught up – preferably in the US, since it was a Canadian
holiday. We went round about to find the
library in Sedro-Wooley, WA.
First we tried to access the wifi from the parking lot. Sometimes that’s worked even after library
hours, but no luck. Then we tried
inside, but we needed a library card to access it. The librarian kindly offered the use of the
computers instead, but they were very, very slow and hung up. So we wasted some time. We were more successful in the Burlington WA
library – a nice library with wifi access if you use their password. So that took a while.
We headed for Canada. The good news was that the line at the border
was very short. The bad news was that we
ended up with a vehicle search, which included the trailer. That probably added another hour to our
trip. We are guessing that the trigger
was saying we weren’t employed. Next
time we will say “retired.” We’ve gone through it before, but it is a pain. More time.
As we approached Vancouver
there was a sign “Toll bridge ahead. Last exit before toll.” Eeek!
We hadn’t gotten Canadian currency yet and surely our EZPass won’t work
here! So we zipped off the exit in search of a
bank. Our GPS search doesn’t work when
the car is in motion, so we needed a nice place to stop first. Then we searched for a bank. We couldn’t find the bank our GPS pointed us
to, so we tried again. We found another
bank with tight parking for a car with a trailer. More time.
With Canadian money in our pocket we headed for the toll bridge,
but there were no toll booths and just a sign that you can pay online. Huh? A
couple exits later we saw a sign for the toll entity well off the highway, so
we followed the signs. There were
machines for people to pay their toll, but they didn’t work. There actually was a person (even though it
was a holiday), but they didn’t take cash.
So we didn’t need to go to the bank after all. Sigh.
We went to Walmart to food shop. That went fine but food shopping in
unfamiliar turf always takes time.
Then we drove through Vancouver
and up the Sea to Sky highway. The Sea
to Sky highway is one of the most beautiful drives. Unfortunately there aren’t really good spots
to stop and take pictures and the other unfortunate thing is that it is lots of
hills and turns, so the driver really needs their eye on the road. Bill didn’t see much, but Barbara enjoyed the
view.
After a tiring drive we arrived at Alice Lake Provincial Park
with a long narrow campsite with ditches on both sides. Bill is still learning
how to back in a trailer and it took a little while before he got it.
