Washington - Olympic National Park – Hurricane Ridge, Part II

Like yesterday, the ocean fog was thick at our campsite, but it only extended a few miles inland. We returned to clear blue skies on Hurricane Ridge and had lunch on the Cirque Rim Trail.  Here is a view looking back at Hurricane Hill, where we hiked yesterday

Then Bill hiked Klahhane Ridge. The best segment was a steep 3.8 miles from Hurricane Ridge, so it was a lot of effort to get to (and return from), but the reward was spectacular views on both sides of the ridge.

Mountain goats are not usually aggressive, but there were warnings posted as a hiker was killed last year on this trail. So when a family of them was walking straight toward Bill on the trail, he just moved two feet off the trail (see the shadow in the picture) and they walked right past him.

In the meantime, Barbara went to two ranger-led talks: one on bears and one on the alpine meadow ecosystem.  The ridge can get 12-24 feet of snow and has a short summer season, but flowers filled the meadow.
