After Campobello, we drove
all the way to Cape Breton Island,
Nova Scotia – about 11 hours.
Needless to say, we didn’t do much exciting that day. Cape
Breton is probably best known for the
Cabot Trail, a loop road that cuts along the coast through Cape Breton
Highlands National
Park. The next day we drove the west side of the
Cabot Trail (the Cheticamp side), stopping at overlooks along the way.
We visited here back in 2000
on a trip with our girls and Barbara’s parents and so we reminisced when we got
to familiar spots.

We hiked the 5+ mile Skyline
Trail loop, which goes through relatively level woodland and meadow until it
gets to cascading boardwalks with a view of the Cabot Trail.
We passed through a “Moose
Exclosure” where the park intentionally protects vegetation from being eaten by
moose. Plenty of moose poop along the trail, but no moose – just a bunny.
Bill tacked on another hike
on the Acadian Trail totaling over 10 miles of hiking for the day.

We ended the day watching
the sun’s effects on the mountains while it set. It’s great to take time to
watch a sunset.
