Barbara
scheduled our Canada trip between two letterboxing events. Letterboxing is Barbara's hobby that follows
clues to hidden boxes that contain hand-carved stamps, and events are gatherings of other letterboxers with lots of available letterboxes. This particular event is
held at Wakeda, a private campground in New
Hampshire where some participants camp and some participants make a day
trip.
Being
the 7th year for this event, they chose a 70s theme, so all the stamps
were related to the 1970s – 70s music, 70s candy, 70s inventions… Being one who
remembers the 70s, it was fun to find a stamp and say “Hey! I remember that!”
Do
you remember the corny 1970’s movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory?
Well Willy Wonka came to this event.
He
handed out chocolate bars at dinner; some of which had golden tickets inside
the chocolate wrapper! Golden ticket recipients won raffle baskets.
Barbara
spent most of her time letterboxing with friends, enjoying potluck meals, and
connecting with other letterboxers. Mostly we find hidden plastic
containers, but occasionally we find something a little
different.
One
letterboxer from California, Elsie,
showed how to make fake rock containers.
Barbara
set up two props at our campsite. One stamp, carved by Barbara’s friend Kim, had
an image of a 1970’s TV, so you might guess where she hid the box.
The
other, carved by Barbara’s friend Melissa, had stamps of a tea set. Elsie just
happened to bring along a tea set she picked up at a garage sale which made a
perfect prop.
What
did Bill do while Barbara was off letterboxing? He installed a new backup
camera on our trailer. Pretty complicated to do as it is wired from the front of the trailer all the way through the inside to the back, but Bill got it done.
Now
we are ready to head to Canada.
