North Carolina & Virginia – Blue Ridge Parkway Part 8

Can you guess what this is? We saw it yesterday at our campground along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We altered the photo to blank out the signs since they gave it away. Our hint is that the signs said “Danger!” Can you guess now?

Well it is a bear trap. We hadn’t seen one before. It reminded us that we are indeed in bear country.

Since the next campground along the parkway was not yet open for the season, it meant a long trip to the next available campground – 153 miles. The forecast predicted rain and there were not too many hikes in this stretch, so we mostly drove with some stops along the way.

This is the Puckett Cabin – the home of a local midwife who lived to 102.

At Groundhog Mountain there is a wooden observation tower and examples of various types of old chestnut rail fence.

We walked around the grounds by Mabry Mill where structures depict rural life in Appalachia.

Mabry Mill is a restored mill with three sections: a sawmill, a gristmill, and a woodworking shop.

We’ve enjoyed the many scenic overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Some overlooks today were obscured by fog creating an ethereal look.

Other times the fog cleared.
