We had a half day before rain was predicted, so we decided
to go to Ocracoke
Island.
Ocracoke Island is part of the Outer Banks, but only accessible by boat or small plane. We arrived at the free ferry just before it was leaving. An hour later we were on the island.
This long thin island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It’s mostly conservation land (beaches and dunes, and some woodland and marsh) with a small village. At Ocracoke Village we got a National Park stamp at the visitor center and saw the lighthouse.

Then we headed to the beach.
There are 16 miles of pristine beach and we practically had
the beach to ourselves.

We also did a short nature hike through island forest.
Storm clouds rolled in so we headed back to the ferry.
