Indiana – Dunes

We left Buffalo and headed toward Chicago, but squeezed in two stops - lucky that the pouring rain stopped.

The first stop was very short. Our route through northern Indiana skirted the edge of Michigan, so … we couldn’t help but bop into White Pigeon, Michigan for a letterbox.

Our other stop for the day was Indiana Dunes, where we started by getting oriented at the National Lakeshore’s Visitor Center. Then we headed to the State Park which actually has the biggest dunes. We’ve been to lots of dunes: White Sands, Great Sand Dunes, Oregon Dunes and the Outer Banks, but this one was different. The trails over the dunes almost seemed like any trail in the woods except the path was sandy. It didn’t have the open feel, we’ve experienced before.

In the meantime Bill took the longer trail #9 with more lake views.

He came back via the beach trail #10 where we met.

We found this feather. It was yellow on the underside and black on the top. We wonder what kind of bird had that feather.

On the way back we went up the largest dune. Fortunately this one had stairs.

New York & Ontario – The Other End of the Rainbow (Bridge)

We stopped in Buffalo New York to visit Barbara’s friend Jeanne. What a special treat to reconnect, stay in the home she grew up in, and do a little sightseeing.

Jeanne was very gracious to cater to our desire to go over the bridge to Canada. Bill did not have a clear memory of having been to Ontario, so we wanted to make it official and that’s what we did, driving over the Peace Bridge.

And here is Barbara with her dear friend Jeanne.

We drove along the Niagara River passing the Chinese restaurant Barbara used to go to and following the river as it heads to the falls. It’s a pleasant drive with nice homes and a view of the river. Several parks line the route. We stopped at one where Barbara found an Ontario letterbox.

Then Jeanne dropped us off and we walked across the Rainbow Bridge.

On the way back to Jeanne’s, we swung by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House. We only had time for a quick pic of the outside, but they now offer tours which we hope to catch on our next trip to Buffalo.

Massachusetts – Off to Great Places!

To quote Dr. Seuss:

Congratulations!

Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places!

You’re off and away!!!*

We pulled out of our driveway this morning heading to Great Places … or at least great places to us. :-)

Our new trailer sits in Chilliwack, British Columbia ready to be picked up. Our car is loaded up with everything we’ll need for life on the road. We know the drill. We’ve been through this before in 2014, but this time we have more stuff: more trailer accessories, more clothes, and more jackets. It will be colder!

     Trailer license plate…… check

     Trailer hitch….………… check

     Credit card…………….. check

And the list goes on.

First stop was only 23 miles away to Community Bible Study in Westfield, Massachusetts. Bill hung out while Barbara spent the morning at her last class for a while. In a sense this trip begins and ends with CBS. Near the end of the trip Barbara will attend CBS training in Colorado Springs for a new role.

Now we are off to Buffalo, New York. Barbara lived in Buffalo during her high school and early college years. It’s been a long time since she’s been back, but we look forward to connecting with an old friend.

Massachusetts - Departure Next Week

We expect to be on the road in less than a week!

The manufacturer completed building our trailer this week and sent us the almost final pictures. We won’t bore you with ALL of them, but here’s the outside.

And here’s the inside.

Anyone who saw our last trailer might think there isn’t much difference, but there are a few modifications.

Lots of options for the route, but we finally settled on this one aiming to be in British Columbia for our October 12th trailer orientation.

Lots of driving, but lots of exploring, too! On the way out we pretty much follow the pattern of driving one day and exploring the next, hoping to meet some old friends and see some new places. Destinations include:

• Buffalo NY and maybe Niagara Falls
• White Pigeon MI
• Indiana Dunes IN
• Chicago IL
• New Diggins WI
• Badlands SD (possibly see the new missile site visitor center)
• Coeur d'Alene ID 
• North Cascades WA, and
• Escape Trailers Industries in Chilliwack BC 

Barbara currently has letterboxes in these states.

So we plan to pick up a few more states along the way.

With seven days left, we’re planning, packing and preparing.

Massachusetts - New Adventures are Coming!!!

Sorry we haven’t posted in a while. We haven’t had too much news. With no trailer, we mostly hung out in Massachusetts delving into projects, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity (Bill), learning a new role at Community Bible Study (Barbara), and getting to know our new area.

But we were itching to hit the road again with a home on wheels. So after much mulling, we decided to get the same model trailer we had – a 19-foot, fiberglass, semi-custom trailer made in British Columbia. It is cheaper to pick it up than to have it delivered, so we will drive there in a couple weeks.

In the meantime our trailer is in incubation. This is it so far. What do you think?

Okay. I know it doesn’t look exciting yet, but we see potential!

Since our pick up date is in October and Barbara has to be in Colorado Springs for Community Bible Study training in early November, we decided to pick up the trailer, explore the west coast, and stop in Colorado Springs on our way home. Looks like we are getting back to new adventures!

Here is a smattering of what we might see.

Massachusetts – A Sad Day

At 2:15 this morning we heard the loud thump of a falling tree…

Massachusetts – Quabbin

We have much to discover in our new area especially now with warmer weather. So we started with the Quabbin Reservoir - since we live in one of the bordering towns. About 40% of Massachusetts gets its water from “the Quabbin.” Massachusetts claims that the Quabbin is “the largest man-made reservoir in the world devoted solely to water supply.”* (There’s always a way to claim a superlative.)

 

Quabbin Park

Most of the 118 miles of shoreline are inaccessible. The most popular section and only access by car is Quabbin Park (a park on the southeast shore of the reservoir), which, lucky for us, straddles our town.

Quabbin Park has a visitor center, trails and an observation tower, as well as, much of the major infrastructure of the reservoir: Winsor Dam, Goodnough Dike, and the Quabbin Spillway.

One day when Carrie visited we saw the dam and observation tower and hiked around the area.

It was a nice clear day to go to the tower.

The park opens daily, but one icy day we found the gates closed. So we walked about a mile in on the park road to the dike and walked the dike loop (the purple route in the map above). A salt truck passed us, so we weren’t surprised when we returned to find the gates opened.
